Prepare Before Your Appointment
Having the required form and identification ready helps the appointment proceed smoothly.
Valid, Non-Expired Photo ID
California DOJ requires applicants to present valid photo identification. Expired identification is not accepted for Live Scan processing.
Completed Applicant Information
Make sure the applicant section of your request form contains the information required by the requesting agency before fingerprinting begins.
HOW IT WORKS
From Request Form to Submission
The requesting agency provides the appropriate Live Scan request form and determines the authorized applicant type and level of service. The Live Scan appointment captures and electronically submits fingerprints using the information supplied on that form.

Request Appointment
Provide your location, preferred date and time, and confirm that you have your Live Scan request form.

Bring Form & ID
Have the appropriate Request for Live Scan Service form and valid, non-expired photo identification available.

Fingerprint Capture
Your fingerprints are captured electronically according to the information and codes provided by the requesting agency.

Electronic Submission
The transaction is submitted electronically for processing. At the conclusion of the Live Scan session, you should receive an ATI (Applicant Transaction Identifier) number associated with your submission.
AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT
Your ATI Helps Identify the Transaction
At the conclusion of the Live Scan session, you should receive an ATI — Applicant Transaction Identifier number associated with your submission.
Keep your ATI information with your records. The Live Scan provider does not determine or issue background-check results. Where results are sent depends on the type of request and the requesting agency’s instructions.

DOJ, FBI, and other applicable processing fees vary depending on the type of background check and the requesting agency’s billing arrangement.
The final amount can be confirmed after reviewing the Request for Live Scan Service form, the requesting agency’s billing information, and the service location.

Mobile Travel Fee — Starting at $50
For qualifying group appointments, the Mobile Travel Fee may be waived. Applicable processing fees depend on the requesting agency’s billing arrangement.
